About The Referee Institute
The Referee Institute was created to further the officiating craft for those just getting started in our profession.
Created in 2026, the Institute is a continuation of more than 20 years of providing a training experience for aspiring officials. Bryan, along with Vickie Van Kleeck, has always striven to provide the best experience for officials hoping to join the college ranks. The community we create inspires a team atmosphere that enhances the experience for all.
The Institute values its long standing staff who have provided expertise and guidance to so many who have worked to achieve their goals in the officiating world.

Bryan Brunette
Camp Director
Bryan was hired as the ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Coordinator of Women’s Basketball Officials in April, 2026 and created The Referee Institute at that time.
A 30 year veteran of DI women’s basketball officiating, he works the ACC, America East, American, A-10, Big East, Big South, Coastal and Patriot League conferences. He has worked numerous conference tournaments, including championship games, and was selected to work 2 Final Fours; Nashville in 2014 and Tampa in 2015.
With a B.A. in Business from Seattle University (‘86) and an M.S. in Higher Education from Miami University (OH) (‘90) his educational background in training and development has guided his passion for assisting newer officials in achieving their goals and has been instrumental in the development of previous camps and now The Referee Institute.
Working with former ODAC WBB Coordinator, Vickie Van Kleeck, over 20 years they built a unique approach to basketball officials’ camps which remains the gold standard today.
He resides, with his husband and four-legged feline daughter Lucy, in Winston-Salem, NC.
